Working as a foreign trained doctor  in Germany

To be eligible to practice medicine in Germany, you must be credentialled and registered with the medical council (Ärztekammer) of one of the constituent states (Bundesland) which then issues a medical license (Approbation). In some cases, it may be possible for foreign-trained doctors to acquire a provisional medical license (Berufserlaubnis) which allows one to work as a doctor, albeit under supervision and in a very limited role (usually in hospitals).

The overall regulatory body for medical practice in Germany is the German Medical Association.

Interest groups for medical doctors in Germany

Various interest groups/unions lobby for the well-being of medical doctors working in Germany (better working conditions, legal representation in conflict cases, etc.). The more popular interest groups for foreign-trained doctors include:

  • Marburger Bund: (www.marburger-bund.de): which represents the interests of the majority of doctors employed in the various private and publicly owned health institutions in Germany.
  • Virchow Bund: (https://www.virchowbund.de ): which represents the interests of self-employed doctors.
